Essential Summer Vocabulary Words and Expressions

With the summer in full swing and the end of the World Cup in sight, it’s time for barbecues, holidays and new vocabulary !
As any language learner knows, each season brings with it a whole new set of words and expressions essential for getting by in daily life.
So here is our handy guide of essential summer expressions:
For school holidays we say
КАНИКУЛЫ [kah’neekooly]
Lucky Russian kids have whole three months of ЛЕТНИЕ КАНИКУЛЫ – summer holidaysThe word for holidays or holiday leave is
ОТПУСК [‘otpoosk]
To say you are going on holidays, say
Я ЕДУ В ОТПУСК [ya ‘yedoo v ‘otpoosk]
I’m going to…:
Я ЕДУ В + country/city
Are you going on tour or a cruise? Say:
Я ЕДУ В ТУР/КРУИЗ [ya ‘yedoo f toor/kru’is]
Feel like fleeing the hustle and bustle of city life for the tranquility of the countryside? Then you’ll like
ОТДЫХ НА ПРИРОДЕ [‘otdykh nah pri’rodye] – literally holiday in the nature
Where are you going to spend your holidays at the beach by the sea, in the mountains? Or maybe a city break is your thing?To answer this question you need to know the following:Я ОТДЫХАЮ [ya ahtdykhahyu] I’m having a holiday +
НА МОРЕ [nah morye] at the sea
НА ПЛЯЖЕ [nah plyazheh] at the beach
На озере[nah ‘ozereh] at the lake
НА РЕКЕ [nah rye’kye] by the river
В ГОРОДЕ [v ‘gorahdye] in the city
В ГОРАХ [v gah’rahkh] in the mountains
